What prompt flows even are and why they glitch
First time I heard the phrase “prompt flow” I wanted to pretend I understood it without asking đ . But once I started actually trying to build themâspecifically in FlowGPTâit quickly became “what is going on here.” The basic idea is that you’re stringing a set of reusable prompt templates together so a whole team can run the same interaction or output format, customized per use case. In practice, this means you’re building multi-step logic using natural language instead of raw code or scripting. It sounds cool.
Until. Nothing. Fires.
Here’s the part nobody warns you about. You can write a totally valid prompt. Each block can work perfectly fine individually. But connect them in a flow, save it, press run, and suddenly it’s like nothing happened. Or worse, part of it runs and the rest silently fails with zero warning. Sometimes the only clue is the output text is missing a value you literally passed into the tag.
There’s this one flow I built to help our product team generate feature briefs. Step one asked for the user story. Step two rewrote it in a clear statement. Step three suggested three example metrics. Step four applied tone matching. Except, no matter what I did, step three always returned the exact same output: “Sample metric: increase of engagement.” That smells like a default fallback when the variable it was expecting just didn’t show up. But no error was thrown ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ.
And you start second-guessing: Did I put the tags in wrong? Are they not getting populated? Is one of the prior steps clobbering the value? (Yes, it was. But more on that later…)
First time building reuse flows do this first
Before stacking prompts into workflows, get comfortable with how FlowGPT stores and moves variable data. Like, very comfortable. Reusable flows arenât like personal prompts where you hardcode context. These ones rely on {{curly_brace_variables}} that receive input from earlier steps or the user interface (via forms). What tripped me up repeatedly was forgetting that FlowGPT’s variable tags are not always inherited cleanlyâespecially when you nest them or copy-paste blocks.
Hereâs a trick that saved me more than once: Turn on the debug preview before building interactions. Once you lay out your prompt steps, donât just test the final outputâclick into each step and manually preview what the engine thinks the prompt is. Several times, I thought I was passing {{tone}} from step 2 to step 5, but it turned out I called it {{adjusted_tone}} earlier by accident. Thereâs no schema enforcement, so the step just says “okay” and outputs nothing.
Also, naming conventions matter more than you’d think. If you reuse a variable label in multiple places, there’s a decent chance one will overwrite another. So I started prefixing all my in-flow vars by step: {{step3_metricSuggestion}}, {{step4_toneAdjusted}}, etc. Itâs long, but at least you know what passed where.
Broken tagging inside prompt steps is invisible
This one drove me up the wall. FlowGPT prompt blocks do not throw errors when something important is missing. If your prompt references a variable that was never passed inâlike {{user_goal}}âthe engine doesnât scream. It just treats it like plain text. And depending on how you phrased it, the model might even hallucinate something passable. Which is… worse?
What this meant in real use: I had a customer support team using a shared triage prompt flow. They typed in the complaint summary, FlowGPT would read it and write a classification (billing, bug, feature request), and suggest a tag. Except the classifier worked weirdly well even when they skipped the input entirely. Turns out, {{complaint_summary}} was missing and the model just plugged in some generic idea of what a complaint sounds like. Slightly terrifying.
Now I add guardrail lines like:
“User complaint:
{{complaint_summary}}
If blank, return: ‘No input detected.'”
At least then I can clue the team to go back and actually fill out the form.
FlowGPT sometimes saves stale blocks
Okay this is a weird one. At least four times now, Iâve edited a prompt block in FlowGPTâchanged some tags, tweaked the wordingâand clicked Save. Looked good in the UI. But when I hit Run, it spat out results using the old version.
My theory? Itâs something about how browser cache and local dev store prompt steps. Because as soon as I did a hard refresh (full reload, not just switching tabs) and reloaded the flow, it either broke entirely or ran fine⌠but matched the step version I expected. So now my weird habit: I save a change, refresh, then test. Every time. Even if I just changed punctuation đ
This also explains why sometimes your teammates using cloned flows report old behavior even after you fixed things. Their browsers probably cached the stale steps unless they reforked it entirely.
Embedding flows in work apps needs stricter input formatting
We tried embedding a FlowGPT flow directly inside our Notion docs via integration blocks. Cute idea: team writes a few bullet points, highlights them, triggers the prompt to rewrite as release notes. The core FlowGPT portion worked perfectly when we filled out all the values in the UI form. But the moment we skipped a detail or used a slightly-off format, it would silently bomb.
Here’s one specific issue we hit: a field meant to receive onboarding steps that were numbered like:
1. User logs in
2. Selects product
3. Hits welcome screen
But if someone pasted steps without numbersâjust bullet pointsâit wouldn’t parse into the next prompt correctly. It just lumped them into a string and misaligned tokens in the final prompt. Fix was to add a parser inside the prompt itself:
“Split steps by line if they begin with a digit or a bullet (⢠or -).”
Then, test that pattern against actual copy-pasted snippets from where itâs used. Donât assume people will provide inputs in the same shape across different tools.
Buttons inside forms misfire unless ordered correctly
This one’s very FlowGPT-specific but had me questioning my life choices for over an hour. You can add buttons or toggles to form promptsâstuff like âformal toneâ vs âcasual toneâ or Boolean switches (âinclude emoji?â yes or no). When I built a flow with two radio buttons and ran it, sometimes neither value registered correctly on the next prompt. And somehow changing their order fixed it.
What I discovered (via painful trial and error) is FlowGPT populates variables from buttons in the order they appear in the form layout. But if two buttons write to the same variable label (like {{tone}}), only one will survive. More confusingly, reordering them in the visual editor doesnât fully rewrite the underlying data map unless you recreate the entire form đ
So my fix: always give each button or input field a unique variable name using full context. Generate an internal map like:
– Formal tone â {{tone_formal}}
– Casual tone â {{tone_casual}}
Then, in the subsequent prompt, collapse them with logic like:
“Final tone:
{{tone_formal}}{{tone_casual}}”
Model will treat it as a string. Only one will be populated, and the final prompt works.
Even working flows get rate limited unexpectedly
Once we got our team reusing prompt flows successfully, we ran into the next panic: rate limits. I built a flow that grabs a personâs LinkedIn about section, rewrites it in the companyâs tone, and spits out a pitch intro. Works great. Until one salesperson ran it like 14 times in a row tweaking phrasing… and got locked out completely.
FlowGPT will not always say youâre rate-limited. Sometimes it just returns an empty string. (You canât make this up.) You refresh, it looks fine… nothing comes out on the next run.
Eventually I figured out there’s a soft cap based both on account activity and token usage. So if youâre chaining multiple prompts, each of which uses many tokens, every execution builds up invisible debt. I had to rewrite the middle part of the flow to be more efficient:
Instead of:
“Summarize the full text in a paragraph, then suggest three edits, then rewrite it.”
I split it into:
“Summarize the text.”
…then sent that result into a second step with shorter total context.
It reduced token usage enough to avoid further hiccups.
Clone reuse only works if vars match exactly
Closing with this tiny frustration bomb: when teammates clone a shared FlowGPT prompt flow, it only works well if they supply inputs that 100% match the variable names. Slight typos break everything with no error feedback.
We had one guy put in {{client_name}} instead of {{clientName}}. The prompt looked okay at first glance⌠but {{client_name}} was never populated. The email said “Hello ,” đŹ
Our fix was a naming doc everyone could reference. Just a simple table:
